Manufactures are beginning to understand the responsibility they possess of minimizing their impact on the environment through the products they produce and during the process in which they are produced. This problem facing many companies is not impossible to achieve but does require a new generation of software solutions that can help support and guide these goals.

Optimized scheduling systems will help manufactures achieve lean and flexible practices while assisting to reduce their facilities impact on the environment. However, shifting to a “green” practice is no small task. Because companies are determined to produce a large amount of product varieties within short distribution window it is almost unavoidable to have an increase in changeovers which in turn will lead to an increase of resources such as capacity, storage space and so on.

Scheduling software contains the ability to effectively optimize and balance the manufacturing planning, sequencing and scheduling over the multiple product lines and constraints that take place. With these applications manufactures have the capability of optimizing assembly line sequences and minimizing their changeover. Of course these practices may be different for each individual company. With optimized schedules that consider all of the constraints during each process can help manufactures become greener and leaner by reducing the unnecessary resources but still meeting the set delivery times.

Most scheduling systems will consider all of the constraints that are placed upon the processes whether it is from outside suppliers or internally. Incorporating “green” objectives into these models can help companies possess the environmentally sustainable manufacturing they are looking for. Waste can be reduced in key areas of the manufacturing process due to optimizing schedules. For example the overall scrap may be reduced and the organization will obtain the flexibility to support a greater variety of products.
